50% energy savings and KNVB-compliant lighting across three pitches
VV Hardenberg '85 is an ambitious football club based in the Baalderveld neighbourhood of Hardenberg. With hundreds of active members and strong volunteer support, the club is constantly working to improve its facilities with a clear focus on sustainability. To improve energy consumption, safety and the quality of play, the club and the Baalderveld Sports Park Management Foundation decided to modernise the lighting on the football pitch. The result is a state-of-the-art LED system that enhances the playing experience, reduces energy consumption and gives the club a more professional standing.
A sustainable step forward
The club replaced the lighting on all three sports pitches with a complete LED system and overhauled the underlying infrastructure. The electrical installation and IT facilities were upgraded too, ensuring the complex is now fully equipped to control lighting and energy consumption in the future.
"We intentionally looked beyond just the lights," explains Rien Veldsink, board member for facilities and sustainability. "This project is the first step in modernising the club's entire energy grid."
High-quality sports lighting to KNVB standards
Schréder supplied 28 BRITELINE floodlights, which are managed by the Schréder ITERRA control system. This setup allows each fixture to be operated and dimmed individually. The existing light poles were retained, maximising cost-efficiency.
The key priorities for the upgrade were light quality, energy efficiency, reliability and futureproofing. The installation meets KNVB standards for sports ground lighting and will integrate seamlessly with future smart energy systems.

From ambition to realisation

A sports lighting upgrade that pays off immediately
Since the new system was commissioned, the club has reaped the immediate benefits. Energy consumption has dropped by roughly 50%, both in terms of total kWh usage and peak power demand. At the same time, light pollution in the surrounding neighborhood has been reduced, and ongoing maintenance costs are significantly lower.
The upgrade is just as noticeable on the pitch. The superior, even light distribution eliminates shadows and improves visibility for players, referees, and coaches alike.

With the new LED sports pitch lighting, Hardenberg ’85 has a sustainable solution that aligns with the club’s ambitions. The combination of high-quality lighting and smart control systems, alongside lower energy costs, provides a solid foundation for further improving the sustainability of the sports complex.
The chosen solution is geared towards future developments such as smart control and integration with a local energy system, without going overboard with unnecessary features. The system is well suited to VV Hardenberg ’85 as a club.
